Voice Risk Analysis……

You’ve probably heard the message ‘All calls are recorded for training and security purposes’, or words to that effect but have you ever wondered why?

It’s legal jargon to cover the Data Protection Act but recently there’s been a new development that is being used by councils, government departments and utility companies.  It’s called ‘Voice Risk Analysis’ and it’s designed to flag up potentially dodgy callers for closer examination and here’s how it works.

When you eventually get through to a human being they start asking benign questions for Data Protection.  You know the kind of stuff; name, first line of your address, post code, date of birth, national insurance number.  The kind of stuff you can reel off without thinking.  While this is happening the computer system is timing how long it takes you to respond and, at the same time, the pitch of your voice.  Now, when they move on to the enquiry, the theory goes, any stress in voice makes the pitch go up slightly and if you can’t instantly recall answers, or are looking them up on a piece paper, the time it takes you to answer is slightly longer.  The computer system then processes all this info to get an average from the two sets of data and if they don’t match you’re flagged up as a potential blagger.  Nice hey.

RFID Chips……

No, they’re not the latest offering from KFC, it stands for Radio Frequency Identification and the ‘beauty’ of them is that they don’t require a power source.  In simple terms they kind of reflect an incoming radio wave a bit like radar.  In the USA since 9/11 they have been inserted into every mobile phone and hardly anyone knows that they are there.  Because they don’t need an external power source, the CIA,FBI or Homeland Security can find you as long as you have your phone, even when it’s turned off and even if you take the battery and sim-card out.  Just why the American Government would want to know the whereabouts of their innocent citizens is anybody’s guess but you can bet it won’t be to send you a birthday card.

Many, including me, would argue that this is an abuse of the fourth amendment which states:

‘The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.’

But the Patriot Acts I & II and the Homeland Security Act have practically shredded the Bill of Rights anyway and ‘Habeas Corpus’ is meaningless, just ask the ‘prisoners’ in Guantanamo Bay?

‘George Orwell would be turning in his grave along with George Washington and Benjamin Franklin.  How long before we start chipping babies?’
