Green Energy and Carbon Reduction Targets……

24 Nov

History……

Since I was at school in the mid 1980’s climate change has been known about and on the agenda ever since.  There have been conferences and agreements about the amounts by which we need to reduce our carbon output and the timescales on which this should happen.  However, not forgetting that some countries, America included, did not sign up to these historical agreements despite being one of the major contributors to emissions.  Whatever the quantities or timescales, in reality very little action has taken place apart from when someone stands to make a financial benefit from any ‘green deal’……

Where are we Now…..?

25 years on and many conferences later the good ol’ US of A has signed up to whatever the latest agreements are.  However, the PM has slipped in the latest strategy for meeting our carbon reduction targets and boldly told us how we’re going to pay for it.  By adding a ‘small’ amount of money to each of our bills the power companies will be able to fund new nuclear power stations, wins farms; the list goes on.  Apparently, the very reasonable cost of approximately £100 to £120 per customer until 2020 is to David Cameron an acceptable amount to pay for the benefits it will bring (Easy to say when the Tax Payer foots your energy bills).

Now, I may have missed something here but having known about this problem for at least the past 25 or so years, shouldn’t the immensely  profitable energy suppliers been using the profits, upon which they have paid very little tax, for any developmental infrastructure needed to provide the power we all require with lower carbon emissions.  Instead, it would appear that they have diverted all of their profits to the shareholder, via the Cayman Islands and expect the consumers to fund the new supplies.  Forgive me if I have misinterpreted the way in which businesses are run but, I would expect an energy supplier to build the equipment and infrastructure it requires to execute its job……

Political Slight of Hand…….

And, not even a very clever one at that.  Whilst the energy companies have squirreled away the billions of pounds in profits that they’ve all made over that past 25 years, you and I are now expected to foot the bill for the technological innovations that they should has been developing out of their own greedy profits.  Plus, there is a significant contingent of the scientific community, Nobel prize winners amongst them, who believe that only a small amount of the apparent imbalance is man-made and that a significant contributor to the changes is natural and linked to sun-spot activity.  In recent documented history we have experienced mini ice ages and unusually hot summers, which has been linked to sun-spot activity……

Differing Scientific Opinion……

We could be at the edge of an irreversible life threatening event from which there is no return with devastating consequences.  We may just be going through one of Earth’s natural fluctuations that will affect some more than others.  Some may benefit whist some may not.  The truth is that nobody really knows and ask 20 scientists and you will get 20 different answers…..

Where does this Leave us in the Political Landscape……

If one were take a cynical stand point, you could argue that with the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, very few ‘terrorist’ events taking place and the neo-conservative requirement for a common enemy required for social cohesion, climate change could be the next big pawn in political thinking.  With ‘carbon trading’ on the horizon yet another fundamental tool for money creation has been created.  Or, perhaps 007’s arch enemy has a cunning plan to take over the world, only this time we can’t stop him.

‘Only time will tell.  I have no faith in the integrity of the world’s leaders, their motives or reasons for seeking so much power.  The only possible answer is that they are some kind of sociopath of megalomaniacs.  I am sure that most are the puppets, whether they realise it or not, to even higher authorities who, like gambling addicts, are addicted to money and power.  Whichever, we live in a corrupt and dangerous world where the welfare of you and me are at the bottom of the agenda’
