The Death of Television……..

6 Nov

It started off with the BBC and ‘Pop Idol’; can you remember the name of the winner?  Then gradually evolved into ITV’s ‘X-Factor’, conceived, produced and created by the second most annoying man in the world, after ‘C.J.’ from ‘Egg-Heads’, Simon Cowell.  We can all watch and have a good laugh at the expense of people with mental health issues, which may be exacerbated by the ‘X-Factor’ experience; a concern raised by many mental health charities and advocates.  But to get to the main point of this post, with all the numerous spin off series; ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, ‘I’m a Z List Celebrity, Get me out of Here’, ‘Big Brother’, ‘Celebrities Ice Skate Whilst Balancing Sausages on their Noses’ and many others is causing the death of television in the same way that CD’s killed off Vinyl.

And Here’s Why……

It’s cheap.  ‘Reality TV’ does not require script writers, screen writers, costume designers, directors, stunt men, makeup artists, set designers, floor managers, prop departments, location directors, extras, grips, runners, score writers; the list goes on but you get the picture.  In a twist of irony Sir Peter Bazalgette, the man behind Endemol who brought ‘Big

Shit Monger

Brother’ to our screens, is a descendent of Sir Joseph Bazalgette, the man responsible for constructing the sewerage system in London.  The latter took the shit out of the capital; his descendent brought it back.

All of these mind numbing television programs are the same and are contributing to the downfall of hundreds of talented backstage people whilst, due to a convenient editorial decision, blatantly promotes the ‘X-Factor Xmas Single’ or Sir Andrew LloydsTSB Webber’s latest musical.  (Incidentally, try placing a bet on the Xmas number 1 at Ladbrookes and they won’t take your money).

A big thumbs up to the BBC for ‘The Voice’ though for adding the swivelling chair gimmick to what was basically no different to ‘Pop Idol’ all those years ago……

‘The practical upshot of reality TV is Simon Cowell gets richer, music gets blander, production costs get cheaper and I get even more bored’

‘If one was hypothetically predisposed to suicide bombing and could not gain access to the Houses of Parliament, tickets are available for the X-Factor’……
