Psychobabble……

The Thesis to be Tested……

The influence of violent computer games, movies & news footage is responsible for the antisocial & aggressive behaviour of our teenagers, or so we are told by the experts……

Nonsense……

I am almost 42 years old.  When I was a child in the 1970’s I was frequently exposed to cartoons such as Tom & Jerry which always ended with the demise of the protagonist under a whole plethora of gruesome techniques, Popeye bashed the living daylights out of Brutus and Wiley Coyote met with a grim ending.  When I was a teenager Freddie Kruger slashed his way through the cast of A Nightmare on Elm Street, Rambo masqueraded countless ‘Gooks’ and celluloid gangsters ruthlessly murdered anyone who stood in their way.

According to the psychobabble I should now be a dysfunctional murdering sociopath unable to differentiate between reality and fiction.  However, I am not.  I therefore propose that the portrayal of today’s youth as such is not only exaggerated but cannot be blamed on Sony or Microsoft……

So What is the Cause……

In my opinion the primary cause of the small percentage of violent crimes carried out by young people is poverty, inequality and hypocrisy.  The images contained within the computer games do have something in common with the cartoons, which also have a basis in reality.  In the same way that the game can be reset and the cartoon characters live to fight another day, the people who are supposed to be setting the example also have a reset button in the form of immunity from prosecution and justice.  Leaders, governments, corporations and dictators go about their business unhindered.  Armed Police officers shoot innocent people like John Charles de Menenez, the lucrative ammunition and explosives cross borders unimpeded and the casino bankers are backed by the taxpayer.  All have material wealth and act with impunity.  By these standards the kids are more enterprising than psychotic……

The behaviour of some young people in this world is so much more complicated than the upshot of a few computer games and Hollywood flicks.  People are perfectly aware of the real world and therein lay the answers……

We are all in this together……
