The Arrow of Time……

Background……

The Copenhagen Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics, for me and many others, reaches a number of counterintuitive and unsettling conclusions.  The nature of the quantum state of the Atom can only be given in terms of probabilities and, further more can be affected by the act of observation.  When unaffected by observation the Atom can said to be in more than one place (demonstrated by the ‘two slit’ experiment’) which also adds the possibility that time itself may not be constant.  However, having thought long and hard about the paradoxical nature of the problem and from the standpoint of the present universe, I have reached a conclusion……

The Many Worlds Interpretation……

The proposal that there may be parallel universes has been around in various incarnations for a long time.  In April of 1956, Hugh Everett completed a paper entitled “Wave Mechanics Without Probability” which explained the manifestations and peculiarities we observe.  It was not a ‘blockbuster’ when it was first released but it could be the closest answer to the way in which the universe functions.  It explains our perception of time and why we perceive it as a past present and future.  Not only does it do this but also negates the paradoxes thrown up by the observations we make……

The Theory (Made Simple!)……

Each quantum fluctuation creates a new universe (think of a quantum fluctuation as a moment in time).  Every time you make a decision or take an action a new universe begins.  In an infinite number of universes every possible outcome, past, present and future already exists.  You enter the universe that your action dictates.  The beauty of this solution is that it answers all of the paradoxical observations and allows for all of the possible events; past, present and future.  It does not violate any of the known laws of Physics and gives us answer to why we perceive things the way we do.

And Finally……

There is only one caveat I can conceive.  It doesn’t have any affect upon us as it doesn’t change our life experience.  It raises the age old question of “What is time”?  Time may be nothing other than a common experience inherent to all living things to enable them to make sense of what they see.  In true quantum reality there may be no time.  Instead of time there are an infinite number of universes through which we pass.  As we transcend universes we fell the effect as the passing of time……
