Business as Usual……

27 Oct

As the Dripping Tap has pointed out on many occasions, when our elected representatives get caught with their fingers in the till, any subsequent investigation takes so long that by the time any final reports are issued and changes put in place, undoubtedly there will have been so many other scandals that we will have all forgotten about the original, criminal scum that run UK Plc, they will have trousered even more of our cash and continue to do so under whatever changes to the rules have been put in place……

Since the Expenses Scandal hit the Headlines……

More than 100 MPs are still using taxpayers money to employ their family members, two years after the practice was exposed by the expenses scandal.

Conservative MPs are the worst offenders, according to details revealed in Commons disclosure documents, with 59 employing family members.

They are followed by Labour, with 53 employing family members, and seven Lib Dems.

Details of the huge salaries politicians were paying to their relatives first emerged during the 2009 expenses scandal.

In the wake of the scandal, a report called for a ban on MPs putting family members on the payroll, but revelations in this year’s Register of Members Financial Interests shows the practice has continued.

The register also lists the perks and outside earnings enjoyed by our representatives at Westminster, ranging from High Street discount cards to huge payments

It shows former prime minister Gordon Brown made £500,000 from 12 speaking dates, as well as £100,000 from a New York university.

Andrew Bridgen, the Tory MP for North West Leicestershire, received monthly payments of £7,773 for six hours’ work as a non-executive chairman of AB Produce, the agricultural firm.

Former Chancellor Alistair Darling, meanwhile, was paid £500 by the Guardian for a review of Tony Blair’s book and also got a £75,000 advance on his own book deal.

Members must also register interests in property, with Bob Blackman, the Conservative MP for Harrow East, declaring six houses in Welwyn Garden City.

His Tory colleague James Clappison, MP for Hertsmere owns 27 acres of farmland, a cricket pitch and 26 rental homes in Yorkshire, while Labour’s Hilary Benn owns part of an Essex nature reserve.

However, not all our MPs are living high on the hog, like Chris Heaton-Harris, the Conservative MP for Daventry, who declared that he gets £30 a match as a football referee.

Likewise Sir George Young, the Leader of the House, who disclosed a gift of a pair of socks and a paperknife worth £10, and Theresa May, the Home Secretary, who listed a discount card for fashion chain Hobbs.
