Faster than the Speed of Light……

26 Sep

Unless you’ve been living in a cave for your entire life, you cannot have failed to have encountered Albert Einstein’s legendary equation; E=Mc2.  Whether you understand it or not, it is accepted as one of the foundations upon which modern physics is based.  In simple terms, the relationship between energy and mass dictates that the speed limit of anything in the universe cannot exceed the speed of light, as the relationship between energy and mass must balance. Therefore, it is impossible to generate the energy required to achieve faster than light travel, or so we thought……

Physics is Weird……

In 1687 Sir Isaac Newton published the Principia Mathematica’, which laid down the three laws of motion, giving rise to the idea of ‘clockwork’ universe.  Unboubtably, this was a work of pure genius and allowed physicists to acurately predict the motion of all the celestial bodies in the observable universe, using the aparatus available at the time.  This view of a mechanical universe was accepted for the following 300 years until Albert Einstien threw a proverbial spanner in the works……

During the 20th century physics just got stranger.  You simply have to abandon any notion of what you think of as ‘reality’.  At the sub-atomic level the solid world you live in and the stuff you’re made from cease to exist.  Even in the empty vacunm of space there is a seething mass of activity where particles and anti-particles spontaneously appear and disapear.  Physicists refer to this as the ‘Quantum Foam’……

So What’s all the Fuss About?…..

The boffins at CERN have been experimenting with Neutrinos.  Neutrinos come in several different ‘flavours’ but carry no electric charge, allowing them to travel through ‘solid’ matter unhindered.  When measuring the time taken to travel the 730 kilometers from Geneva to the Gran Sasso Laboratory in Italy, the results indicated that some Neutrinos arrived ‘early’?  Scientists are still checking the results to rule out any possible errors but if the data is correct the laws of physics may have to be re-written……

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe……

Talk of time travel has already hit the headlines of the mainstream media, who have clearly failed to grasp even the most basic principals involved in sub-atomic physics.  However, one interesting idea has been put forward by proponents of String Theory, who suggest that the particle may have taken a ‘short cut’ through a higher dimension of space, leaving Einstein’s theory in tact, while adding weight to idea that alternate dimensions of space can exist in the ‘gaps’ in ours……

For the rest of us, time remains the same and there’s little chance that you’ll bump into yourself at the cheese counter in Tesco……
