Rogue States……

24 Sep

The Middle East, as we know it today, has, as is the case with almost every other country in the course of history, undergone conflict for thousands of years.  Despite having been usurped by numerous claimants, predominantly in the name of religion, its historically indigenous population is that of the Palestinian Arabs.  Past conflicts have faded into the mists of time but the current status quo can be traced back to the twentieth century……

The Holocaust……

Adolph Hitler attempted to ‘solve the Jewish problem’ by the systematic extermination of millions of identifiable Jewish people, amongst others.  The displacement of the Jewish people and Holocaust survivors led to the formation of the state of Israel in 1948, backed by the Americans and opposed by the Arab nations.  At the same time the restoration of Hebrew as the Jewish language was invoked.  The establishment of an Israeli state and the war for control of ‘The Holly Land’ which ensued, leads us to the present day……

The United Nations……

Israelis represented at the United Nations General Assembly; Palestine is not.  It is widely acknowledged that Israel is in breach of Article 41 of The Hague Regulations and in violation of numerous other International laws.  It continues to build permanent settlements in occupied territory, displacing native populations, restricting the supply of fresh water and inhibiting the distribution of humanitarian aid, under the thinly veiled supposition that it in some way could contribute toward acts of terrorism against Israel……

The ‘Two State’ Solution……

The rights and wrongs of whether Israel has any legitimate claim to the land are historically complex and it is unlikely that a complete re-evaluation of the situation will happen.  The general consensus from all but the most radical of standpoints is that of a ‘Two State’ solution.  However, for this to happen all sides must first agree a ‘cease fire’.  Only then can progress be made.  The unfortunate reality of the situation is that the self elected leaders of the free world, the United States of America, acting in its own interests and without whom a diplomatic solution is unachievable, is more than happy to have this island of instability at the heart of the Middle East…….

Meanwhile, millions of Palestinians continue to suffer……
