The End of the Universe?…..

Supersymmetry – The Standard Model of Particle Physics……

By the end of the 19th century experiments had shown that Atoms, once thought to be the smallest fundamental building blocks of nature, were themselves made up of smaller particles.  50 years later, with the development of more powerful accelerators, scientists discovered that these smaller particles were in fact made up from a multitude of yet smaller particles.  By the 1960’s new particles were being discovered with such frequency they became known as “The Particle Zoo”.  The model of the building blocks of nature was a mess and a new theory was needed to explain it……

In the late 1970’s The Standard Model was conceived.  The Standard Model has 17 ‘species’ of elementary particles: 12 fermions or 24 if distinguishing antiparticles, 4 vector bosons (5 with antiparticles), and 1 scalar boson. These elementary particles can combine to form composite particles, accounting for the hundreds of other ‘species’ of particles discovered since the 1960s.  It also describes the forces and interactions between particles.  Later experiments  confirmed some of the predictions of the theory.  However, one missing piece of the jigsaw was the elusive Higgs boson, the holy grail of particle physicists and the route to a Nobel Prize……

New Results from CERN……

LHC Beauty, one of the four experimental ‘stations’ at the Large Hadron Collider, has failed to find evidence of the Supersymmetric particles, leading physicists to conclude that the theory is incomplete or incorrect.  Two other of the LHC’s experiments have also failed to detect any supersymmetric particles.  (Six billion dollars well spent I feel)……

Implications……

Two of the predictions of the theory are the existence of the Higgs boson and that of Dark Matter which The Standard Model of Cosmology relies upon to explain the apparent missing ingredient required to hold our universe together.  As has been proven by history, when science appears to have grasped the answers to the most fundamental of questions, it throws up yet more……

And Finally……

When Deep Thought had calculated the answer to life, the universe and everything to be 42, humankind had simply failed to understand the question in the first place……
