Good Science, Bad Results……

29 Aug

The human race has made advances in scientific understanding which has undoubtedly improved all of our lives.   However, I am of the opinion that, when taken to extremes, we may have misunderstood some of the underlying principals at work and in doing so bypassed the mechanisms of survival which have served us well for hundreds of thousands of years……

O.C.D?…..

We’ve all met overprotective parents with kitchen cupboards that contain more types of cleaning product than a Boots warehouse.  They wash everything at near boiling point in a cocktail of detergents, disinfect every inch of their houses on a daily basis and jump on their children every time they put their fingers anywhere near their mouths.  I believe, and there are papers published to confirm my view, that in a well meaning attempt to protect their children from disease, that they are inadvertently creating problems which wouldn’t otherwise exist.  Evolution is far more cleaver than any scientist at SmithKlineBeetcham.  If the natural propensity for small children to put things in their mouths were a threat to our existence, then Homo-sapiens would have evolved with our mouths on the top of our heads and our arms unable to bend beyond 30 degrees.   Exposure to bacteria and viruses at an early age builds our resistance to them and the overzealous attempts of paranoid parents to  protect their offspring probably make a major contribution to the increase in allergies and asthma……

Vanity……

Another contribution to certain diseases could be the search for eternal youth, or more specifically the synthetic chemicals created to penetrate the skin in the mistaken belief that it is an achievable goal.  Cosmetic manufacturers proudly boast of new discoveries to which they give exotic names.  These are designed to deliver other equally exotic chemicals through the skin in a fruitless attempt to halt the aging process.  Just how these molecules interact with our biological processes over time is little understood.  None of this would seem to be of much concern if the profits of the manufacturers are any barometer by which to judge the public’s caution……

And Finally……

Food.  Or rather the lengths that the multinational retailers will go to make money from it.  The list of processes and additives is to long to list but amongst them are Hydrogenated fats, which conveniently turn vegetable oils into spreadable solids, playing havoc with naturally occurring cholesterol, artificial sweeteners which have a molecular structure completely unlike that of any natural sugar and preservatives in the form of chemicals or processes, increasing shelf life and with it, profits……

Conclusion……

Science in the pursuit of knowledge has brought many great benefits to the human race.  Science in the pursuit of money hasn’t……
