Shale Gas and Earthquakes……

17 Jun

Shale Gas, as far as I understand it, is a process of drilling into the Earth and then planting high explosives in the rock to shatter it thereby releasing the natural gas locked within the layer of rock to which you have drilled……

This is now common practice and was taking place offshore in the area close to the fault-lines whose movement caused the recent Earthquake inJapan……

This has also been happening in the area surrounding Blackpool, Lancashire.  Blackpool have also experienced two small earth tremors in the recent passed and, though whilst not on the scale of the recent Japanese disaster, has forced the company undertaking the work to stop until it can be established whether there is any causal link to the Blackpool quakes……

Now, I not a geologist and do not claim to have any deep scientific understanding of the subject, it is strange that the tremors in Blackpool has forced the cessation of the practice until it can be established if the two events are linked.  Again the developmental techniques being used by mankind to extract the energy upon which we are so reliant could be a contributory factor in the disturbances seen all over our planet……

Perhaps it’s time to call a halt to this practice until a little more data has been collected?……

Best to air on the side of caution……
